"The habits you have today are building your future for tomorrow"

Wow, what a loaded statement. There are 2 portions of that statement that deserve your attention. The first one deals with being mindful about today, take a close look at the activities and actions in your day because they form your habits. These are the things that you do every day without thinking like reading the paper over your morning coffee, driving to work, eating lunch out, watching 2 hours of tv at night and going to bed late and getting up late. No big deal right?

Well it is if your goal is to lose weight, improve your health, develop a more intimate relationship with your partner or increase the revenues in your business. You can't keep doing the things you are doing and hope that your goals and aspirations will magically appear. There is no fairy God mother in the real world. All you got is you, a unique set of skills and determination, now go take on the world...

On a more gentle note: The future happens because of the disciplines we practice on a daily basis, those small little steps that become "habit". What we do shapes who we are and who we want to become and those habits are the very things that determine our success. The saying old habits die hard can be true if you never take a moment to really understand your motives behind them before trying to change them. Awareness is the first step. When you recognize how your habit is holding you back from achieving your future you can then become willing to adopt a new one which initiates change. Sometimes it is just stopping an action that can make a powerful impact on our future, and sometimes the habit needs to be replaced with a more positive action. Try the following process when initiating change:

What habit do I have today that is sabotaging my future?
Just identify what it is for now, you may not even choose to do anything about it, awareness is the key.

Is this habit giving me a sense of comfort, pleasure, release or is it just a habit?
It is important to identify if something is giving you a sense of well being even if it is not positive.

Is there something else I could do in its place that would give me the same result?
Choose something else that would give you that same sense of well being that creates positive results, your future.

What 1 small thing could I incorporate that would move me toward change
Be specific and really determine what could work for you, not what others are doing.

Am I willing to make a commitment am I making to incorporate this in my life?
You have to be willing, it is the first step. If you are not willing wait till you are.

Once you have made the commitment, decide on the specific action you will need to take to form a new habit and do it. But do it for a minimum of 21 days, consistently and stand back and take a look at your new future! Now go take on the world.
